The Box Office Report: Welcome to the ‘Taylor Swift’ Era
‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’ easily wins the weekend. But was it enough to dethrone ‘Joker’?
Hello! Welcome to The Box Office Report for the weekend of Oct. 13-15, 2023.
1. Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour
Weekend gross: $97M
Total domestic gross: $97M
Last weekend: New release
Percent drop: NA
The only surprise at the box office this weekend was that Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour didn’t break the $100 million mark. This film was still a juggernaut, steamrolling every other film in theaters.
Did The Eras Tour set the record for an October opening weekend? Well, until we get the actual numbers in on Monday, it depends on whose numbers we’re looking at. The $97 million number comes from AMC, but according to Deadline, rival distributors are clocking Taylor Swift’s concert film at $94.3 million. With Joker holding the October opening weekend with a $96.2 million debut, the difference between these reports is going to matter …

2. The Exorcist: Believer
Weekend gross: $11M
Total domestic gross: $44.9M
Last weekend: 1st
Percent drop: 58
The Exorcist: Believer has already jumped to No. 2 on the all-time box office chart for the Exorcist franchise, passing 2004’s Exorcist: The Beginning ($41.8 million). There’s still a long way to go until the latest film in this franchise passes the original Exorcist’s $231 million domestic haul.
3. PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie
Weekend gross: $7M
Total domestic gross: $49.9M
Last weekend: 2nd
Percent drop: 38
No one is defunding the PAW Patrol. The latest movie in the franchise has surpassed its predecessor, PAW Patrol: The Movie, easily beating its $40.1 domestic gross. PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie still has a bit to go before it beats the $151.4 million worldwide haul of the first PAW Patrol movie, currently sitting at $126.4 million.
4. Saw X
Weekend gross: $5.7M
Total domestic gross: $41.4M
Last weekend: 3rd
Percent drop: 27
Despite slipping to No. 4 this week, Saw X is just a few million away from outgrossing every Saw film since the franchise dropped off after Saw V’s $56.7 million. The latest Saw movie has passed Spiral ($23.2 million), Jigsaw ($38.1 million) and Saw VI ($27.7 million) and is closing in on Saw 3D ($45.7 million). Before diving into these numbers this week, I never realized that the Saw franchise has never cracked the $100 million domestic mark. Feels like one of these films, especially one of the first few, should’ve performed that well.
5. The Creator
Weekend gross: $4.3M
Total domestic gross: $32.4M
Last weekend: 4th
Percent drop: 31
Only another $501 million left to go until The Creator passes Rogue One and becomes director Gareth Edwards biggest film …
