‘The Garfield Movie’ goes back for seconds, takes the No. 1 spot
A weak weekend allows ‘Garfield’ to feast while ‘Furiosa’ falls to No. 3.
Hello! Welcome to The Box Office Report for the weekend of May 31-June 2, 2024.
1. THE GARFIELD MOVIE
Weekend gross: $14M
Total domestic gross: $51.6M
Last weekend: 2nd
Percent drop: 42
Huh, who would’ve guessed that shutting down the movie industry and delaying a bunch of releases instead of agreeing to the fair contract requests from the writers and actors unions would’ve backfired on the studios? (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Versedebuted with $120.7 million this weekend last year.)
With no new major movie hitting theaters this weekend, The Garfield Movie was able to snag the No. 1 spot that it was so close to winning last weekend. Comparing the fully animated The Garfield Movie to 2004’s hybrid Garfield: The Movie isn’t an exact one-to-one, but the Chris Pratt take is outperforming the Bill Murray version through two weekends, $51.6 million to $42.4 million.
